Adults refer to animals or humans who have completed their developmental stage. Adults are a social concept as well as a legal concept in the human world. In contrast to "minor" or "non-adult" an legal adult is an individual who is a the age of majority. They are thought to be competent, responsible and independent. An adult who is legally mature can be described as a major. 18 is the typical legal age for adulthood however, this can vary based on the country of origin and legal status, as well mental maturity.

In the lifespan of an individual, adulthood refers to the age when a person has achieved full mental and physical maturity. Adulthood, as generally understood, begins at the age of either 20 or 21. After middle age (starting at around 40), comes older age (around age 60). The adulthood process is split into three phases beginning with early adulthood (18-mid-30s) and mid-30s to mid-60s and the final stage of adulthood, mid-60s to death. When we reach early adulthood the body is at its physical maturity to the maximum. However, our body's size and weight could increase. When we are young the physical capabilities of our bodies are at their highest which includes the strength of our muscles, our reaction speed, sensory abilities, and cardiac functioning.
